The Department of Conservation is seeking a skilled and motivated Environmental Steward to join our team in Tauranga. In this role, you will be responsible for maintaining and improving our unique recreation and historic places for our community and visitors to enjoy.
About the role:
This is a key operational position that involves working as part of a small, close-knit team who maintain campgrounds, tracks and routes through a variety of changing landscapes. Your work will see you involved across the Tauranga and Karangahake District.
Key responsibilities:
- Maintenance and repair of tracks, huts, bridges, stairways, campsites and DOC facilities
- Operation of chainsaws, scrub-bars, backpack sprayers, diggers and other minor earthwork machinery
- Assisting with hands-on ecosystem work carried out by the Biodiversity team
- Interaction with visitors and people from DOC's conservation partnerships
- Working alongside other DOC staff, contractors and volunteers
Requirements:
- A high level of physical fitness and experience in the backcountry
- Hands-on and practical skillset
- Pest control experience
- Ability to work effectively in a team, take direction or work independently when needed
- Strong commitment to safety protocols in the field
- A full New Zealand driver licence
- A deep respect for Te Ao Māori and tikanga, with a genuine passion for working with whānau, hapū, and iwi
