About the Role

The Department of Conservation is seeking a highly motivated and experienced individual to join our team as a Fishery Ranger. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work in a dynamic environment, contributing to the sustainable management of a world-class wild trout recreational fishery.

As a Fishery Ranger, you will be primarily based in the field, working alongside your team to carry out fishery field delivery, supporting day-to-day operational work plans. Your duties will include undertaking a range of work, such as vessel operations, angler advocacy, compliance and enforcement, monitoring and data collection, drift dive escapement counts, and Tongariro National Trout Centre (visitor asset management).

You will also contribute to the delivery of other programmes to assist with the sustainability of, and angler participation in, the Taupo Sports Fishery. Regular outdoor work will be required, including refurbishment of angler track assets, with a strong emphasis on physical tasks using machinery such as scrub bars, and chainsaws.

  • Strong interest in fishing;
  • Strong emotional intelligence, able to speak confidently and relate to people when completing surveys and conducting compliance interviews, compliance investigations;
  • Dedicated with strong integrity, courageous and willing to enforce the law;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with good report writing and literacy abilities;
  • Good level of computer literacy (Word, Excel, Outlook);
  • Problem solving and analytical skills, with attention to detail accurately record data;
  • Team-focused;
  • Good level of physical fitness;
  • Confidence in and around water;
  • Available for weekend work and to work outside normal hours;
  • Full New Zealand Driver Licence;
  • Desirable: Boat handling experience, or Boat Masters Certificate, or similar qualification;
  • Experience using a wide range of machinery such as chainsaws and scrub bars.

Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory – this includes holding a valid work visa that covers the whole period of employment. The salary range for this position is $60,314 to $75,603 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.
