Your creativity, enthusiasm, and commitment to youth development will contribute to the success of our youth programs.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:Supervision and Safety: Ensure the safety and well-being of children at all times, actively supervising activities, meals, and transitions.
Implement and enforce safety protocols and emergency procedures.Activity Planning and Coordination: Develop and implement daily schedules for specialty activities, ensuring a diverse range of offerings throughout the camp session.
Plan and organize resources, equipment, and materials needed for each activity.
Coordinate with other staff to integrate specialty activities into the overall program.Activity Facilitation: Lead and facilitate assigned specialty activities.
Provide instruction, guidance, and encouragement to children, fostering skill development, creativity, and teamwork.
Ensure the safety and well-being of children during all activities, adhering to YMCA policies and procedures.Youth Engagement and Support: Create a positive and inclusive environment where children feel encouraged to participate and express themselves.
Build rapport with youth, actively engaging with them and fostering positive relationships.
Provide support and guidance to children as they explore new interests and develop skills in various activities.Safety and Risk Management: Maintain a safe and organized activity environment, following YMCA safety protocols and guidelines.
Monitor and address any safety concerns or incidents that arise during activities, taking appropriate action as needed.Professional Development: Participate in training sessions, staff meetings, and professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge relevant to the job.LEADERSHIP COMPETENCIES:Functional ExpertiseProgram and Project ManagementDeveloping Self & OthersQUALIFICATIONS:The Counselor (Activity Specialist) will meet the qualifications set forth by the YMCA of South Hampton Roads and the Virginia Department of Education, Division of Child Care Health and Safety.
Minimum qualifications include:Be at least 18 years of ageHave a high school diploma or the equivalentMeet the minimum qualifications for "Lead Teacher" as defined by the VA Department of Education Division of Child Care Health and SafetyStaff shall be in good character and reputationCPR/First Aid certifications required within 30 days of hireCompletes all pre-employment requirements including background checksAdequate speaking, hearing and writing skills appropriate for interacting with children requiredAbility to be on time, every time for scheduled shifts requiredAbility to work at various program locations preferredAbility to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgroundsWORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:Will be required to walk, stand, kneel, stoop, push, and lift up to 50 poundsWhile performing duties the employee may occasionally work in the outside weather conditions, and is exposed to wet, cold and/or humid conditionsContinuous operations requiring attention to detail and multi-taskingWill be exposed to cleaning suppliesMust be able to stand or sit for long periods of timeMust be physically able to successfully complete required certificationsDuring peak program seasons, may be expected to work night and weekend hours to meet program needsBACKGROUND CHECKS:An offer of employment is contingent upon receipt of satisfactory results to meet minimum requirements of the position.
