Royal New Zealand Navy Marine or Weapons Engineering Officer The Navy has two engineering officer roles: Marine Engineering Officers (MEO) ensure the Navy's ships can float and move. They are the experts on ship structure, propulsion, power generation, hydraulic and habitability systems. MEOs on-board a ship lead teams of highly skilled technicians, who operate, maintain and repair this diverse range of equipment. The MEO is also a critical decision-maker in the ship's response to emergency situations and damage control. Weapon Engineering Officers (WEO) are the Navy's experts in weapon systems, communication, sensors, and combat management systems. WEOs on-board ship lead a team of highly skilled technicians who maintain and repair the sophisticated equipment that provides our fighting capability. During emergency and combat situations, the WEO manages the provision of the ship's fighting capabilities and is a critical decision-maker in the ship's response to these events. WEO and MEOs experience a range of shore-based positions that form part of their career development. These could include management of complex projects, equipment procurement, ship system and physical upgrades, and performance analysis. You'll progress through a range of roles in your career, ensuring you develop a broad understanding of naval engineering. These are uniformed/military roles. Upon successful enlistment into the Navy, you will undertake Junior Officer Common Training (JOCT) that usually starts in January or July each year. This is a 21-week course of basic military training at the Devonport Naval Base. After you have completed JOCT you will move on to trade-specific training, consolidated by on-the-job work. Minimum Requirements Marine Engineering Officers (MEO): Undertaking or a recent graduate in a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) or a Bachelor of Engineering (Tech) with specialisations of mechanical, mechatronics, electrical and electronics, naval architecture or maritime majors. Weapon Engineering Officers (WEO): Undertaking or a recent graduate in a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) or a Bachelor of Engineering (Tech) with specialisations in mechatronics, electrical and electronics, software or computer systems. *Other similar specialisations are considered on a case-by-case basis. Year 13 students working towards entry for these qualifications are also encouraged to apply, given the Navy offers sponsored tertiary study opportunities.
