We are looking for an Avalanche Technician/ Forecaster to come and join our close-knit team based in Te Anau, Fiordland.
Te kowhiringa | The Opportunity
This role is a key part of the Milford Road Alliance. The Alliance is a combination of both NZ Transport Agency and Downer NZ staff based in Te Anau whose sole focus is the Milford road. This includes the avalanche control programme, road maintenance, Homer tunnel management and incident response.
Primarily this role is to ensure the safe operating of the Milford Road Avalanche Control Programme with forecasting, meeting contract compliance, HSE Act and Works' Safety Quality and Environment frameworks and standards.
The Avalanche Technician/forecaster will work within a small avalanche forecasting team and provide expert support to the Alliance Manager to ensure that a safety culture of avalanche awareness is maintained through training, system management and use of industry standards.Outside the avalanche season, activities will focus on repairs, maintenance and improvements to the alpine assets, facilities and equipment associated with the avalanche control programme. It is also expected that some work on snow science and avalanche innovation projects will be undertaken, plus during periods of low work activity (both during and outside the avalanche season) effort put into developing a working relationship with the road maintenance crews.

To be successful in this role, you'll need the following skills and experience:
Have an MSc in Avalanche Safety Management (Stage II) / NZ Cert in Avalanche risk management Level 6A minimum of 5 years avalanche forecasting experience, ideally holding a lead roleExperience in rescue techniques providing training for assistants & volunteersCertified Handler / Controlled substance license – explosives, flammables - use and varied experienceHelicopter experience – able to safely access mountains and variable terrainDrivers Licence – D endorsementFirst Aid CertificationFurther training may be required or offered in the following areas:
CIMs ManagementAdvanced avalanche qualificationsPre-Hospital Emergency CareWorking at HeightsTraffic Management STMSMachinery OperationKo wai matou | Our Organisation
