The local government sector has been navigating significant change over the past few years with more to come. Central government reform processes with implications for our sector continue to evolve and roll out and we need to consider what will meet the needs of our community and plan for the future. In this context, strategic thinking and analysis is critical to a large organisation like Christchurch City Council.
The work of the Strategic Policy Team touches on almost all aspects of Council activities and supports a systems-view and connection across the organisation. We help the Council to chart its direction and prepare key strategic documents mapping this out. The Team also manage a busy policy and regulatory work programme, responding to local issues and providing sound guidance for the organisation.

As a senior member of the Strategic Policy team, the Principal Advisor Biodiversity takes responsibility for:
Providing thought leadership across a range of biodiversity issues
Leading the provision of strategic and tactical policy advice to managers and Council on biodiversity matters, and identifying issues and opportunities for achieving an integrated approach across Council functions
Leading oversight of, and manage monitoring and reporting on, the implementation of Council's biodiversity strategy
Building and maintaining relationships with key partners
Taking a strategic view and generating solutions through working with colleagues, key stakeholders and decision makers
Providing support to custodians of biodiversity through an advisory role with the Christchurch Biodiversity Fund
Key to the role is the ability to establish good relationships and to clearly communicate sound, pragmatic advice. Additionally, you will:
Hold a tertiary qualification in a policy related discipline, and have at least 10 years experience in the preparation of policy advice and conceptual and strategic planning in local or central government
Have an understanding of the place of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in New Zealand including as it affects the role of a public servant
Have excellent written, verbal and inter-personal communication skills
Be able to produce and recognise high quality policy work
Have the ability to provide support and coaching to colleagues when required
