Korero mo te Turanga - About the RoleWe are seeking a Policy Analyst to join the Insights team within the Strategy, Insights & Evidence directorate of Policy & Trade.
The work of Policy and Trade underpins the performance of the economy across areas that matter to all New Zealanders, like the safety of our food, climate change, animal welfare, biosecurity, rural communities, fisheries, and much more.
As a Policy Analyst, you will provide timely and accurate research, insights and advice on the operation of policy frameworks, by monitoring and evaluating international and domestic trends, initiatives, and programmes that impact on New Zealand's primary sector.
This is not your typical Policy Analyst role. You will identify and articulate advice based on how global food system and geopolitical shifts are likely to impact New Zealand by taking an evidence-based approach to research on the trends and issues critical to the primary sector by:
Supporting stakeholder relationships with sector participants, government agencies, Maori, and other relevant stakeholders to identify global and domestic trends that impact sector performance, as well as economic, social, technological and environmental shifts that could affect the sector;Supporting the development of evidence-based action related to the primary sector by:applying both a public policy and commercial lens to the research and analysis undertaken;developing an understanding of key areas of focus such as sector transformation, technological advancements and market disruption;developing practical solutions to sector challenges that take into account economic, social and environmental impacts;Supporting the development of products related to commissioned focus areas by maintaining effective sector, stakeholder and government relationships on the progress of specific issues.Mou - About YouYou will ideally be currently working as a Policy Analyst or in a similar role, with an interest in broadening your experience and knowledge of the primary industries.
You will be a proactive and curious individual who will be able to demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills, an analytical approach with numeric ability, and a proven ability to forge effective partnerships.
To be successful in this role, you will be able to demonstrate:
Experience as a policy analyst or in a strongly similar working environment;Critical thinking and analytical skills to solve complex problems;Experience using a range of oral, written, and visual mediums to communicate effectively in diverse situations;Strong self-motivation, with a demonstrated curiosity and desire to learn more;A demonstrated ability to anticipate possible challenges and prepare for or mitigate them;Flexibility and comfort with working with ambiguity;Computer literacy for basic programmes such as Word, Excel;Good interpersonal and communication skills. This is a Wellington based role reporting to the Chief Insights Officer and will work alongside two Principal Advisers. This team covers an interesting and broad variety of topics which is supported by their strong cross-sector and industry knowledge, and strategic thinking.
The team has a collaborative working style so that everyone feels supported in contributing to their collective goals. The team also works closely with the wider Policy & Trade branch, government agencies and industry so there is ample opportunity to build meaningful relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
