Join Te Papa Atawhai Department of Conservation to deliver high-quality conservation outcomes across the stunning Kapiti Wellington District.
As a Ranger Heritage & Visitors, you will perform a crucial operational role within the close-knit Kapiti Wellington Team.
You will be part of a team responsible for maintaining the visitor assets within the district.
You will be focused on supporting the management of front and back country tracks and structures, cycleways, bookable huts, campsites, predator-free islands, and some historic buildings and sites.
In addition, from time to time you may assist other teams such as the Biodiversity team or the Community team to deliver that work.
You will scope and manage parcels of work by utilizing your practical and technical skills, and your literacy and numeracy skills.
You will work with field rangers to deliver the work program on a regular basis.
Your work will be varied and include a balanced mix of office and field.
You'll be encouraged to initiate continuous improvements at sites and facilities while being adaptable and willing to learn.
As part of your role, you will provide technical advice and support to team members in your area of specialty.
Desired Skills, Experience and Qualifications: Practical skills such as horticulture, amenity maintenance, landscaping, farming, carpentry, property maintenance, etc.Growsafe certification.Experience with relevant machinery (e.g.
4x4, mini excavators, mowers, tractors, scrub bars, chainsaws, etc.
).Computer packages - SAP, GIS, and GPS skills.Ability and flexibility to work away from home in back-country or island locations, with overnight stays.
(Approximately 10 days per month is usually the maximum but this can vary due to business requirements).A natural team player and collaborator.Strong logistics, planning, and problem-solving skills.Drive and initiative to independently research and resolve issues.Prioritization and coordination skills.Experience in managing projects and managing multiple projects at the same time.Contractor engagement and management.Excellent communication and relationship management, with the ability to support and coordinate others.Experience working with iwi, hapu, whanau/Treaty Partners and external stakeholders.A commitment to health and safety.Physically fit.Class 1 or above NZ Driver's License.Ability to work on a standby roster for 7 days, 3 times a year, for responding to out-of-hours wildlife, compliance, or emergency call-outs.

There are 7 permanent rangers in this team, and they deliver maintenance work in a wide geographical area including sites like Otaki Forks, Makara, Waikanae Estuary, Hemi Matenga, Kapiti Island, Mana Island, Matiu Somes Island, Orongorongo Valley, Catchpool to name just a few
Additionally, the Kapiti Wellington office has two other teams: a Biodiversity team and a Community team.
Kapiti Wellington Office has a total of 22 permanent rangers.
This position may assist with work in other teams from time to time.
