The YMCA mission is the highest priority and its goals for these children and their families are of the utmost importance.
The Camp Counselor maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals, promotes the potential of all youth, and provides a quality experience to both youth and their families.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:Provides sight and sound supervision to a group of children and program activities.Follows all standards, policies and procedures as established by the YMCA of South Hampton Roads, including Employee Code of Conduct, Child Abuse Reporting and Prevention, emergency procedures and state licensing standards where applicable; makes ADA accommodations where appropriate; maintains the program site, equipment, and required program records.Nurtures children through purposeful programming; plans activities such as crafts, STEM, games, etc.
that are intended to achieve program goals and outcomes, are culturally relevant, are developmentally appropriate, and are consistent with the Y's values.Creates a positive rapport and shared interest with all youth; models relationship-building skills in all interactions.Provides opportunities for youth to lead, problem-solve, and make decisions and choices within the program and provides daily opportunities for youth to reflect on and respond to their experiences.Performs and adheres to safety, cleanliness, and uniform standards associated with COVID-19 prevention.Performs all other duties as assigned.YOUTH DEVELOPMENT COMPETENCIES:Developing Self & OthersInclusionQUALIFICATIONS:Meets a minimum age of 18 years or olderPossesses a high school diploma or equivalentHave six months of supervised programmatic experienceCPR/First Aid certifications required within 30 days of hireCompletes all pre-employment requirements including background checks.Adequate speaking, hearing and writing skills appropriate for interacting with children required.Ability to be on time, every time for scheduled shiftsAbility to work at various program locations preferredAbility to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgroundsCommitment to inclusion and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)WORKING CONDITIONS:Requires effective team-building and team-leadership skills.Must maintain cooperative, functional relationships with program participants, teammates and supervisors.Must maintain a positive, energetic attitude toward YMCA work, goals, and values.ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS, PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:May be required to walk, stand, run, kneel, climb and stoopMust be able to sit on the floor and get back upContinuous operations requiring attention to detail and multi-taskingMust be able to lift, pull and pull up to 50 poundsMust be able to stand or sit for long periods of timeMust be physically able to successfully complete required certificationsBACKGROUND CHECKS:An offer of employment is contingent upon receipt of satisfactory results to meet minimum requirements of the position.
