Laboratory TechnicianDepartment: Technical (Product Quality and Development)Employment Type: Permanent - Full TimeLocation: Shap Blue Quarry & Asphalt Plant, CumbriaDescriptionThe purpose of the role is to efficiently and effectively assist in the quality assurance of quarrying and surfacing products.
To conduct onsite and offsite materials testing and update electronic records.Key ResponsibilitiesTo test and sample aggregate, bituminous and unbound and earthworks materials including grading analysis, binder content and physical, chemical and mechanical testing in a safe and efficient manner, both in the laboratory and on contracting sites/plant.To conduct daily organoleptic checks for lab, production facilities and all stockpiles.To maintain a safe and tidy workspace and ensure the efficient running of the laboratory.To maintain quality standards by following Company and accrediting bodies quality procedures and protocol.To record sample details on test record sheets and laboratory software.To calibrate all testing equipment.To prepare for inspections from independent accrediting bodies.To undertake daily laboratory equipment checks.To investigate all material related complaints & provide suitable & sufficient feedback & evidence to support.To provide technical cover for other contracts within UK & Ireland.Skills, Knowledge & ExpertiseEducated to A-Level standard (or equivalent) preferred but not essential.Experience working within a similar role and/or within the construction industry preferred but not essential.Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office suite including Excel.Experience of working with recognised accreditation standards, ie BS, ISO, NRA.Understand and have knowledge of all current UK and NRA (BS EN) standards, for aggregates, sub bases and coated materials.Knowledge of test procedures for aggregate, bituminous, unbound and earthworks materials.Experience of working in a team environment, providing information and support to colleagues.Ability to be flexible in working hours, working night shifts or weekends if required.Driving license to enable the post holder to fulfil the duties of the role.Customer focus – Providing an effective and efficient service, working to build positive working relationships with client and customers.Teamwork – Strong team player, forming positive working relationships within the team and with all departments, ability to make informed judgements and decisions and convey these to team, willing to be flexible and adaptable working across all areas of the department.Continuous Improvement – A problem solver, wanting to continuously improve ways of working, applying critical thinking to complex problems, critically analysing data from a range of different sources.Personal Development – Self-starter, highly motivated and able to work on own initiative.Honest & Integrity – Committed to working ethically and honestly, supportive of colleagues.Passion for Excellence – Delivers high quality work, excellent communication and reporting skills.Health, Safety & Environment – Committed to safe ways of working and aware of the importance of working safely to avoid risk to self and others, environmental and legal awareness.Job Benefits25 days holiday plus bank holidaysCompany pensionEmployee Assistance ProgramShare Save SchemeHoliday purchase scheme
