Dunedin, New Zealand Southern Youth Development Full time

About SYDSouthern Youth Development (formerly Malcam Trust) is a youth development trust whose purpose is to work with young people (aged 12 - 24) to improve their ability to succeed in life. To do this we undertake a range of programs and services, all aimed at meeting the individual needs of each of the young people we work with. ProjectOur is a social enterprise project that salvages donated bikes, and bikes dumped at the Green Island recycle centre, and either rebuilds good working bikes from the various salvaged parts, or breaks them down into component parts for recycling. The good working bikes are then sold or donated to people who can't afford or justify purchasing a new bike.  You can read more about this in the Otago Daily Times article We do this to provide young people, who may be facing challenges, with the opportunity to engage in meaningful, practical work. Through this experience, they discover the joy of creating valuable items that serve a purpose and benefit others. The result has both environmental and social benefits Contributes to a circular economy, of reuse, not dispose.Encourages and fosters cycling as an environmentally transport optionEnhances the physical and emotional wellbeing of people as a result of cycling for both recreation and commuting. But the biggest benefit is the positive engagement and transition in attitude and outlook for young people who are otherwise disengaging. Their practical involvement in to achieving a good outcome, can enable a permanent and positive change. The activity happens at the Green Island recycle centre, at syd's base at Jubilee Park (45 Maori Road, Mornington), and in various schools and other locations around the city. We now want to significantly expand this program, involve a lot more young people, refurbish a lot more bikes, and significantly increase the scale of the benefits we are achieving.
