Reports To: Chief Executive, Wellington Rugby Football Union (WRFU)
About the Role
The Wellington Rugby Football Union is seeking a highly skilled and driven Head Coach to lead the Wellington Lions, a team competing in New Zealand Rugby's prestigious National Provincial Competition (NPC). This role is ideal for a coach with a vision for excellence and a passion for developing players to their fullest potential within a high-performance environment.
As Head Coach, you'll be responsible for guiding our players and coaching staff, creating a cohesive, winning culture on and off the field. Working closely with the WRFU Chief Executive and Head of Athletic Performance, you will be instrumental in the design and implementation of innovative training programs, player development initiatives, and coaching strategies.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership: Establish and promote a team vision, values, and standards that align with the Wellington Lions' goals, fostering an environment of accountability, discipline, and integrity.
Management & Planning: Partner with Athletic Performance staff to create a structured coaching plan that encompasses preseason, in-season, and post-season objectives.
Coaching Excellence: Lead coaching sessions to ensure tactical and technical excellence, enhancing player skills and team performance.
Player Development: Collaborate on individual player development plans and provide regular feedback to drive ongoing improvement.
Squad Selection & Contracting: Oversee team selection in consultation with assistant coaches and support talent identification and contracting processes.
Stakeholder Relations: Engage with WRFU, players, coaches, and the wider rugby community, representing the Wellington Lions with professionalism and fostering relationships that promote growth.
Key Selection Criteria
Minimum of 2 years coaching experience at the NPC, Super Rugby, or equivalent international level.
Strong understanding of high-performance coaching principles, player development, and performance technology.
Proven track record of establishing and executing a team vision, leading diverse teams, and achieving results.
Exceptional communication and presentation skills, with the ability to represent the team publicly.
High cultural awareness and adaptability within the rugby environment.
Relevant coaching accreditation (World Rugby Level 3 or NZ Rugby equivalent).
