About the role Nelson Hospital is seeking a dedicated and motivated Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Registrar to join our team from mid Feb 2025.
This is an exciting opportunity to work in a supportive and dynamic environment while contributing to the delivery of high-quality critical care services in the stunning region of Nelson.
As an ICU Registrar, you will play a pivotal role in providing critical care to patients within our multidisciplinary team.
You will work under the supervision of experienced ICU consultants, collaborating with medical, nursing, and allied health professionals to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
The role is rostered over Monday – Sunday and will require you to work both in and out-hours work.
No on-call is required; however, the position includes additional duties.
About the Team/Service/Location Nelson Hospital's ICU provides comprehensive care for critically ill patients, including medical, surgical, and trauma cases.
ICU service has a strong focus on multidisciplinary teamwork and patient-centred care, and onsite access to diagnostic services, including imaging, pathology, and pharmacy support.
The multi-disciplinary team consists of intensivists and anaesthetists with an ICU skillset.
You will have opportunities for professional development through clinical education, conferences, and research in a supportive and collegial work environment.
About you: Responsibilities include: Assessing and managing critically ill patients in the ICU and providing support to other hospital departments.
Participating in daily ward rounds, case discussions, and clinical handovers.
Performing emergency procedures such as intubation, central line insertion, and arterial line placement under supervision.
Providing high-quality care for patients and supporting the hospital's Rapid Response.
Participating in a rotating roster, which includes day, night, and weekend shifts.
Contributing to quality improvement initiatives, research, and audits within the ICU service.
Skills and experience Eligible for an Annual Practising Certificate and General scope of practice with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
PGY3 or above including exposure to critical care, emergency medicine, or anaesthetics.
Strong clinical decision-making skills and the ability to work effectively in a high-pressure environment.
Excellent communication and teamwork skills and commitment to ongoing professional development.
ACLS certification (or equivalent) is preferred.
Competency with te ao Maori, tikanga, and te reo Maori or a commitment to starting your journey and taking ownership of your learning and growth.
Experience in projects / initiatives which give effect to Te Tiriti principles and frameworks, and the application of Matauranga Maori and Kaupapa Maori approaches, particularly as they apply in healthcare settings.
