The focus of this new role is to provide students with the specialist academic learning and skills to assist them to improve their learning outcomes from certificate through to postgraduate level. Reporting to the Senior Pasifika Manager, Pasifika Development Office, you will have an opportunity to develop a diverse range of tools, content and educational technologies ensuring that there are evolving support and continuous improvement in the delivery of targeted Pacific student support services.
Responsibilities include:
* Coordinating Pacific student learning and achievement initiatives
* Enhancing culturally responsive teaching by supporting staff through Tapasa and PER-aligned programmes
* Collaborating across teams to align Pacific-focused strategies with institutional performance and engagement goals
* Developing a supportive relationship with students and providing a culturally safe learning environment that accommodates a range of learning perspectives.
* Providing academic skills development in numerical literacy and literacy support through one-to-one tuition, group workshops and facilitating referrals for students who need specialist support.
* Providing learning and academic writing skills support for individuals and groups.
* Identifying students that have specific learning difficulties or a disability and utilise the support of MIT and external services.
The role combines:
* Student-Facing Work: Direct academic support, referrals, and aligned activities through workshops and clinics
* Staff-Facing Work: Cultural capability building through professional development and integration of Pacific pedagogies across curriculum
This is a varied role where you will be working with teaching staff to contribute to programmes providing feedback and input about effective teaching methodologies and liaising closely with other service units within MIT and in the wider community. You will have the opportunity to improve service offerings, resources and have input to the development of online service information and learning tools.
We are seeking a person with a minimum of a bachelor's degree and teaching experience in English and Maths with at least three years' experience of successfully providing learning and study skills support to tertiary or secondary students. Candidates with strong community work experience will also be considered. Strong written and oral communication in a Pacific language is preferred. The successful candidate will need to be able to deliver a broad range of high-quality specialist activities and will demonstrate knowledge in curriculum design from certificate to degree programmes.
