Add expected salary to your profile for insightsAs the Public Protection Manager, you will lead the regulatory teams within the Public Protection Section, overseeing key areas such as Environmental Health, Food and Liquor Licensing, Parking and City Watch, and Animal Control. This role focuses on delivering a comprehensive compliance programme by effectively managing resources, services, and systems to support public safety and protection.The position includes implementing Council's compliance and enforcement strategies with a risk-based approach and serving as Secretary of the Gisborne District Licensing Agency under the Sale of Liquor Act 1989.You will also recognise the importance of the role as a Treaty partner and how this underpins the work of Gisborne District Council.Key ResponsibilitiesOverseeing the development and delivery of efficient regulatory programmes that ensure compliance with laws, standards, and best practices, while aligning with Council policies and legislative updates.Leading enforcement, risk management, and education initiatives, fostering staff development, and driving continuous improvement through technology and process optimisation.Providing strategic direction, support, and training for teams, ensuring effective resource allocation to meet targets and comply with statutory requirements.Managing recruitment, training, performance evaluations, and disciplinary processes as necessary.Building and maintaining effective partnerships with staff, stakeholders, and mana whenua, upholding Treaty of Waitangi principles to deliver meaningful outcomes for the community.Minimum RequirementsA minimum of 7 years' experience dealing with a wide range of environmental issues, or equivalent relevant experience.A tertiary qualification in science, environmental studies, resource planning, or a related discipline (Honours degree or conjoint with a secondary degree preferred).Significant experience in compliance, enforcement, and strategic planning.Proven experience in a supervisory or management role with direct reports.Sound, up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Resource Management Act, Local Government Act, Biosecurity Act, and Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act.Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain strong relationships.Competency in budgeting and financial responsibilities.Additional InformationFlexible on start and finish timesHybrid working (home and work)Relocation assistanceOra Day leave - birthday or any other significant day leavePiritahi Day - an additional leave day to spend with whanau & friends.Waiata and Kawhe Korero Te Reo lessons.Staff Discounts at local retailers and big brandsAllocated training budget for career development and to support professional affiliation membership (where relevant to the role)Work with a great team and enjoy regular, lively social eventsAccess to reduced health insurance premiums for you and your family through Southern CrossWalking distance to the CBDModern office spaceFree eye examsA culture of health and wellbeing with free EAP services and regular staff wellness initiativesAnnual flu vaccinations and health checks1 of 6 Unitary Authorities in NZHere at Gisborne District Council, we pull our values from the community we serve.
