The Department of Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine at Health New Zealand’s Counties Manukau District serves a culturally diverse population of approximately 600,000 people across East and South Auckland.
We provide anaesthetic care for a broad range of elective surgical specialties in addition to a busy and diverse acute workload.
Anaesthetists are rostered to work at both sites where Counties Manukau District provides surgical services. Middlemore Hospital is a busy 800-bed tertiary-level teaching hospital with 14 operating theatres. 8km away, Manukau Surgical Centre at Manukau Health Park provides an additional 10 theatres for lower complexity, short-stay surgery.
We provide approximately 32,000 anaesthetic episodes per year across all surgical specialties, including general surgery, orthopaedics, urology, otorhinolaryngology, ophthalmology, burns, plastics, and gynaecology.
Our district offers several regional specialist services, including the National Burns Centre and tertiary regional referrals for acute spinal injuries, mangled limb, plastic surgery, hands, maxillofacial surgery, and rigid bronchoscopy.
In addition, the anaesthetic department provides a small amount of off-the-floor work in MRI, CT, interventional radiology, and procedural sedation.
We also provide acute, complex, and chronic pain management across both sites.
To meet these demands, CM District anaesthetists are collegial, flexible, and skilled team members. Our anaesthetists have a true generalist skillset and work together as a team to solve problems using individuals’ subspecialty interests and experience.
As the ideal candidate, you will have clinical experience in some or all of the areas listed above and will either be registered or be eligible for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.

We are an Accredited Employer with Immigration NZ and can provide support in gaining an Accredited Employer Work Visa if you meet the Immigration criteria.
