Mana Mokopuna - Children and Young People's Commission is an independent advocate for all 1.2 million mokopuna aged under 18 years in Aotearoa. We also advocate for care-experienced mokopuna aged up to 25 years.
Our name, Mana Mokopuna, describes who we are and what we stand for. At its heart, Mana Mokopuna recognises the many elements that will support mokopuna to thrive. It focuses on mokopuna in the context of their family, whānau, hapū, iwi and wider community. It also recognises that their participation in decisions that affect them is vitally important.
Te moemoeā: kia kuru pounamu te rongo; our vision that all children and young people of Aotearoa live their best lives.
Mō te tūnga | About the role
This 6-month fixed-term opportunity is based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara. As the Principal Advisor Māori you will provide expert advice and guidance which contributes to the promotion of the rights, interests, and wellbeing of mokopuna Māori and their whānau, hapū and iwi.
Weaving together your knowledge of te ao Māori, and the needs and aspirations of whānau, hapū, and iwi across the motu, you will use your strong analytical skills to provide technical leadership across our advocacy function. You will identify key opportunities to affect positive change for mokopuna Māori and contribute to strategic advocacy planning to realise these opportunities.
As a senior kaimahi within the tari, you will lead and contribute to cross-tari initiatives and activities that contribute to improved outcomes for mokopuna, raising awareness of the unique rights of the mokopuna of Aotearoa, affirmed through Te Tiriti o Waitangi and UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Along with supporting advocacy efforts, you will provide guidance on internal analysis approaches, and support the identification of external research opportunities which promote the wellbeing of mokopuna, with special attention to te ao Māori.
You can view and download the full position description below.
You may have a background in policy or strategy and be looking for your next career move driven by purpose, or perhaps you are currently working for an iwi, hapū, or community organisation and want the opportunity to contribute to influencing systemic change for mokopuna.
You will bring your intellectual leadership and deep commitment to Māori values to your mahi, while understanding and being able to navigate the machinery of government. Above all you will be exceptional at ensuring the voices and aspirations of mokopuna and their whānau, hapū, and iwi are at the heart of everything we do.
The successful candidate will also have:
- Exceptional communication and engagement skills (both written and verbal)
- Experience in leading and managing strategic planning or projects, ideally with experience in advocacy spaces
- Strong critical and strategic thinking skills and political savviness
- Strong analytical skills and a proven ability to synthesise information, draw conclusions and make clear recommendations.
We are open to considering secondments from other organisations.
Benefits:
- A salary range of $127,749 (min) to $141,499 (mid), up to $168,999 (max) gross per annum
- Flexible working options with a hybrid model – balance time between life and mahi, working from both the tari and home
- Opportunities to further develop your Te Reo Māori through regular lessons, along with waiata and kapa haka
- Wellbeing benefits, including access to Rongoā Māori and Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) services
- The chance to work with a passionate team of kaimahi dedicated to achieving the best outcomes for mokopuna across Aotearoa.
Me pēhea te tuku tono | How to apply
- Must have the legal right to work in Aotearoa
- Apply online via NZ Government Jobs (jobs.govt) with an up-to-date CV and cover letter outlining your motivation and how you meet the role's requirements
