Te āhua o Te Tūrunga– The nature of the position

This role is based in our Wellington office on Tory Street.

As a Data Analyst/Data Engineer, you will be responsible for creating compelling visualizations of complex data sets to provide insights on the New Zealand workforce, vocational education, and skills needs for different industries. Additionally, you will provide basic level support to our Data Engineer assisting with data ingestion and quality assurance of datasets.

During the fixed term, you will build dashboards and visualizations using data within the Shared Data Platform. You will use PowerBI as the main tool to create visualizations for internal and external users. One core responsibility will be transitioning the maintenance and further development of these resources to analysts in the Workforce Development Councils. You will work to support the integration of external-facing data visualization products and analysis into the website for the Shared Data Platform. Finally, you will also support core functions as needed by the Data Engineer to assist with basic maintenance of the platform.

Qualifications/Experience
  • A tertiary qualification in statistics, information science, data analytics or other relevant discipline, OR experience of working with complex datasets.
Skills
  • Proficiency in Power BI essential, knowledge of other data visualization and design tools is beneficial.
  • Excellent data storytelling, analytical and communication skills.
  • Ability to incorporate te ao Māori and take a Te Tiriti-focused approach to all elements of the work. Skills in te reo or in tikanga Māori are valued, and all staff are expected to grow and improve their cultural capability.
  • Ability to share knowledge and support others to upskill on visualization tools and techniques.
  • Product delivery focus with an ability to deliver milestones and work to deadlines.
  • Strong team player with good collaborative and interpersonal skills.
  • Flexibility, adaptability to change, and a proactive approach to problem solving are essential.
  • Other desirable skills include experience with SQL and knowledge of other coding languages such as R or Python.
