Waikato, New Zealand Transpower Full time

Enjoy learning from a highly experienced, diverse, and supportive team.
Maintain and help develop dynamic models of power system components.
Analyse Aotearoa's power system security & engage with industry participants.
Our core purpose is to empower the energy future for New Zealand - a future that delivers a net-zero carbon economy and a reliable and secure electricity system.

About the team
The System Operator Power Systems Group provides a service of multifaceted power system modelling and analysis, engineering, and risk and assurance management to enable Transpower as System Operator to meet its principal performance obligations under the Electricity Industry Participation Code and successfully operate the New Zealand electricity market and power system today and into the future.

The Power System Engineering team provides power system engineering support for our system operator control rooms, power system modelling (including dynamic modelling), study of existing and future power system risks and technologies, and works with industry participants to understand how their generators interact with the rest of the system.

Work at the heart of the electricity sector, with the System Operator
If you are an emerging power systems professional who loves a technical challenge and has a passion for renewable energy and strategic thinking, working for the System Operator gives you the opportunity to work at the very heart of enabling a net-zero carbon future.

Supported by a collaborative team, you'll explore and communicate the challenges and opportunities that the transition to a 100% renewable electricity system will bring.
Using your outstanding analytical skills, you'll help us analyse the power system and maintain our models that we use to identify power system risks which will enable us to keep the power system secure and resilient. You'll have time and opportunity to develop, and to be mentored by experienced engineers.

What will you bring?
You will be tech savvy with a keen interest in power systems or electrical analysis and modelling. With outstanding communication skills, you'll enjoy working both as part of a team and independently to analyse the future state of the power system

To be considered, your CV and cover letter will demonstrate:

A BE (Hons) in Electrical Engineering (or similar).

Great analytical and problem-solving skills.

Outstanding attention to detail.

Some experience in modelling, and power system analysis (ideally with MATLAB, PowerFactory, or PSCAD, but we can provide training).

Join us at Transpower
Aotearoa is powered by the people who work here. Every home, every marae, every electric vehicle, every hospital relies on the electricity we manage and deliver. This is your opportunity to join us on a mission that affects all New Zealanders, every day, and long into the future.

With over 28 nationalities, our people provide diverse perspectives, knowledge, and deep and varied experience which they love to share. We work in the office or on-site for a minimum of three days each week, which helps us build and maintain relationships, support learning, deliver outcomes, and sustain our culture. This approach also offers staff the flexibility they need for both work and personal commitments, with adaptable daily start and finish times.
