  • Work in a role where you can influence positive and meaningful changes

At Te Toka Tumai | Auckland DHB, we are committed to upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi and providing culturally safe care. We value role modelling manaakitanga as demonstrated by Ngāti Whātua in the gifting of their whenua on which our hospitals stand. We aspire to having a workforce reflective of the communities we serve and achieving equitable outcomes for all.

Te whiwhinga mahi | The Opportunity

The High and Complex Needs Service for Mental Health at Auckland District Health Board comprises the Buchanan Rehabilitation Centre and the Assertive Community Outreach Service both based in Point Chevalier, Auckland.

Assertive Community Outreach Service (ACOS) is an intensive Community Mental Health Team. The ACOS team works with people who have a history of poor engagement with mental health services and who present with high risk associated with their condition. The aim is to provide responsive treatment to Service Users/Tangata whai i te ora who require more flexibility and intensity of support. ACOS covers all of the Auckland District Health Board area.

Buchanan Rehabilitation Centre (BRC) is a 40-bed inpatient rehabilitation service providing a therapeutic recovery-oriented environment open to people residing in the Auckland DHB and Waitemata DHB areas. BRC accepts referrals of people aged 18 to 65 years, although the majority of clients are under 30. Many present with the complex challenge of both severe mental illness and co-existing drug and/or alcohol problems.

There are three Full Time Equivalent Consultant Psychiatrist posts and a part-time GP across this service group. In addition, there is a full-time registrar at BRC and medical student placements.

We are looking for a full-time Psychiatrist for ACOS; however, there may be some potential for flexibility. We’d be happy to discuss this with any interested people. BRC and ACOS are located in Point Chevalier, next door to each other. Either role will include being on the SMO after-hours on-call roster.

For an initial confidential discussion about the role, please contact Brendan Porter, Clinical Team Leader at or phone on 021 533 792.

Ideally, you will be vocationally registered with the Medical Council of New Zealand ( ) with a current Annual Practising Certificate or eligible for the same. We are also happy to consider Locum Tenens or people on a provisional vocational pathway.

Our experienced Psychiatrists welcome the opportunity to work alongside either junior or experienced colleagues.

Please note , if you are an overseas specialist, you will be required to provide source verification of your qualifications for your registration application. For more information about the registration process and source verification of qualifications, please click here .

You will bring positive experiences of working collaboratively with clients, families, and multi-disciplinary teams in both inpatient and community settings. We will offer you a stimulating and collegial working environment in a pleasant setting with good opportunities for professional development.

We recognise there is more to life than mahi | work, and we encourage and provide access to all our staff several services and benefits to support themselves whilst they are employed within Te Toka Tumai | Auckland DHB.

Please submit your application online, outlining your experience and motivation to apply for this role.
