We have an exciting opportunity for a senior lawyer to join the banking legal team within ASB's high performing, supportive, and collegial in-house legal team.
We are looking for a Senior Legal Counsel with 10+ years relevant private practice or in-house experience.
As part of our Banking Legal Team, you will provide legal support principally to ASB's retail and business banking teams. This role will give you the opportunity to work directly with these teams, supporting them with product and lending queries, digital initiatives, and compliance with a broad range of regulatory obligations, including those relevant to climate change and frauds and scams.
Relevant practice areas include banking and finance, financial services regulation, financial crime, and general litigation and commercial legal work. The role will involve collaborating with a broad range of internal clients.
- Assist with managing a broad range of legal issues in relation to the subject matter.
- Provide sound, timely and effective legal advice to a broad range of internal clients.
- Develop and maintain relationships with internal clients.
- Liaise with external lawyers and other advisers.

- You will have relevant legal experience or a strong desire to develop that experience.
- You will be a lateral thinker who enjoys working in a collaborative way, comfortable thinking on your feet, and enjoy working in a fast-paced environment.
- You will have the ability to build and develop effective relationships with a broad range of stakeholders, including senior leadership, project managers and many others.
- You will have an ability to work autonomously, with support.
- Financial services industry experience is desirable, but not crucial.
- You must hold, or be eligible to hold, a practicing certificate as a lawyer in New Zealand.
