Hamilton, New Zealand Emprego NZ Full time

**We want more good people to come and do great things with us.**

**We love where we live in the mighty Waikato, and we’re committed to making it even better. That’s why we work so hard to look after our region and the people who live and work here.**
**The customer is at the heart of everything we do, and all staff have an important role to play in the delivery of exceptional customer service.**
**Our work is as diverse as the region we care for - from the tip of the Coromandel Peninsula to the slopes of Ruapehu. We’ve got ambitious goals and there are some tricky issues, but that’s what makes it so interesting.**

We’re looking for a Whitianga-based Maritime Officer to manage and administer navigation safety in the Waikato, and to ensure the efficient and effective operation of coastal and inland waterways and safe passage of all vessels.

This is a hands-on regulatory role. You’ll be required to operate within, and ensure compliance with, the acts and regulations governing harbour and waterway activities. This will be achieved through regular maintenance, inspections, compliance activity, and public education.

If you have a strong background in compliance, enjoy interacting with people, and have experience or an interest in boating and maintaining the safety on our waterways, come rain or shine, then this is the job for you.

**_
Key tasks and responsibilities:_**
- Carrying out compliance activity such as on-water patrols, identifying non-compliance and following through with regulation, investigating incidents, and writing detailed reports.
- Interacting with the public by educating them and holding them to account for unsafe boating behaviours.
- Regularly working outdoors and in unpredictable weather conditions.
- Providing operational support to other organisations or individuals, and appropriately prioritising that support.
- Assessing information and identifying navigation safety issues.
- Holding or attaining a recognised Maritime NZ vessel operator’s qualification within an agreed timeframe (essential).
- Available for ‘duty officer’ responsibilities, attending to calls outside of normal work hours and on weekends, when required.
**_
To be a Maritime Officer, you will have proven experience and can demonstrate the following:_**
- A background or strong interest in boating and Navigation Safety legislation.
- Working within a regulatory environment.
- Methodical, with a high level of attention to detail.
- Highly effective organisational skills including time management, prioritising and forward-planning skills, as well as the ability to multi-task.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, and a high level of computer literacy.
- A high level of commitment to health and safety in the workplace for yourself and others.
