I am a criminal barrister working out of Bonnington House, Christchurch.

My office consists of myself and one junior barrister who runs her own files in addition to assisting me.

I am looking for a law clerk who can help my office on a casual basis from January to February 2025.

You will be an independent contractor while clerking.

**Role Description**:

- I undertake all types of criminal work from low level to pure complex crime (serious violence and sexual violence; wounding, aggravated robberies / burglaries). January to April are particularly busy this year.
- You will need to undertake photocopying, scanning and archiving, as well as file creation and simplistic typing and administration tasks.
- The role may also include analysis of evidential sufficiency on files; legal research, letter writing, drafting submissions and memorandums, bail variations, drafting affidavits and speaking with family members of clients.
- You may also get the opportunity to sit in on client meetings, attend court and the parole board, and visit the prison/cells.
- The hours are somewhat flexible, however, a minimum of Monday, Wednesday and Friday is required.
- I need a contractor who will invoice me weekly for the work done.

**Requirements**:

- While there is no grade level average expected in applicants, I need common sense, high EQ, attention to detail and analytical thinkers.
- You must be tidy and organised, and not daunted by managing your own time across a lot of different files. You have to learn and retain a lot of information.
- You must be positive, hard-working, fast, focused and fun. I expect you to work hard, learn fast and be proactive in asking questions.
- Your written work must be clear, concise and plain. Fancy words impress no one and do not reach the target audience.
