He angitūtanga | About the role
How would you like to lead a team of Seasonal Hut Rangers looking after within Aotearoa's oldest and most iconic National Park and surrounding dual status world heritage area? Join Te Papa Atawhai Department of Conservation to deliver conservation outcomes amongst the Tongariro National Park and District.
You'll lead your team in the day-to-day delivery of the low - medium complexity capital build projects and provide technical oversite to deliver quality heritage and visitor assets throughout the region.
With support and direction from the Operations Manager and regional planning team, you will lead back country and front country heritage and visitor maintenance and development projects. You'll oversee contracts for goods and services, operational budgets, risk management and progress reporting.

**In the role, you will**:

- Lead assigned projects, including historic site restoration, back country and front country track work, hut and amenity site maintenance
- Maintain back country bridges and other structures
- Take a keen interest in visitors safety
- Provide leadership in the field and run the day-to-day operations of the Lower North Island building team
- Manage contracts when required
- Lead a positive team culture, setting an example for others.

Based at our Palmerston North site workshop, you'll be willing to travel regularly and have the ability to be away from home for extended periods. Basic tools and onsite vehicles available.

**We are keen to hear from you if you have**:

- Practical experience in construction, including experience building wooden structures and working in remote locations;
- A current LBP or trade qualification is desirable;
- Solid knowledge of the building code;
- Experience leading projects or programs, including planning, implementation, supervision, delivery within budget and timeframes, and reporting
- Experience in contract management, including budget reporting skills
- Ability to lead, train and mentor team members, and able to work independently
- Tech savvy with a drive to learn new systems, including the ability to use computer databases and information systems
- Strong stakeholder relationship skills to work effectively with diverse partners
- Able to deliver successfully in collaboration with tangata whenua and take te ao Māori into account in all decision-making;
- Excellent resilience, a positive attitude and ability to use your own initiative;
- Ability to travel/be away from home for extended periods;
- High level of physical fitness;
- Strong health and safety focus;
- Full NZ Drivers License Class 1 or above, able to drive manual;
