We have an exciting opportunity to join Emergency Communications as a Dispatcher.

This is a challenging yet immensely rewarding opportunity where no two days are the same, keeping our public and Police teams safe is a big responsibility which takes a certain kind of person with the right skills and resilience.

This role asks a lot, but it also gives a lot. You will be working within a supportive team environment where people care and work together to get the best outcomes. The first six weeks of your employment will be fulltime training, this is where you will learn the aspects of handling emergency calls before commencing further training and mentoring to learn Dispatch.

After training, you will work two shifts beginning early morning, followed by two shifts beginning late morning or in the afternoon and then two shifts overnight, before having four days off. This roster covers 24 hours a day, 365 days including public holidays and weekends. In return you will receive an additional 15% compensation for hours worked between 6pm and 6am. There are additional leave entitlements for hours worked on weekends, in the evening & overnight and also a shift allowance. The generous leave provisions equate to 35 workdays off per year.

Dispatchers utilise modern systems and technology to assess, plan and prioritise police response to all calls for service. It requires fast decision making and constant reassessment of competing demands and the ability to analyse critical information to ensure police response to any incident is coordinated in a safe, effective way.

This role is integral to enabling our people to be safe and feel safe, as such, we are looking for people who can identify risk, exercise judgement and be diligent in following process and procedure designed to optimise officer safety.

Although the role has a significant focus on the tactical response of our frontline staff, integrity and empathy form a critical part of decision making.

Full training is provided with the opportunity to obtain a New Zealand Certificate in Emergency Communications Centres (Level 3) NZQA qualification.
