Auckland City, New Zealand New Zealand Government Full time

term Fellowship positions for the 12 month period starting February 2024.

About Us
Te Whatu Ora, Counties Manukau District, serves a culturally diverse and rapidly growing population of approximately 600, 000 people across South Auckland.

Our primary facility, Middlemore Hospital, is a busy 800 bed teaching hospital with anaesthetic services provided to 14 theatres, Obstetric Unit, The National Burns Centre, interventional radiology, cardiac catheter laboratory, and shortly a gastroenterology suite. Middlemore is one of the busiest acute surgical units in Australasia where you will gain exposure to acute trauma and all surgical subspecialties with the exception of Cardiothoracic and Neurosurgery. Our obstetric service provides support for approximately 7000 deliveries per annum, including a significant proportion of high complexity cases.

Manukau Surgical Centre is our second facility with service provision for planned-care (elective) and acute-arranged procedures across 10 operating rooms, in addition to an anaesthetic-led post operative care unit for higher needs surgical patients. Anaesthetic Preadmission Clinic for assessment of high risk patients also runs from this site.

We provide acute, complex and chronic pain management across both sites.

Whilst large, we are a cohesive, collegial department with abundant learning opportunities provided by enthusiastic, innovative and dedicated clinicians with a solid team-oriented culture.
We are able to offer a wide range of diversity and case complexity, and you will be continually stimulated and challenged in a supportive environment. This will enable you to attain your personal learning objectives.
Our department is accredited for training by ANZCA, with 25 trainees, including SHOs, and 7 Fellows.

About the role
On offer are up to 7 ANZCA approved clinical Fellowships.

PF0151 General anaesthesia with subspecialty interest in peri-operative medicine
PF0152 General anaesthesia with a subspecialty interest in burns
PF0152 General anaesthesia with a subspecialty interest in obstetrics
PF0152 General anaesthesia with a subspecialty interest in regional anaesthesia
PF0149 General anaesthesia - up to three positions available.

Four of our fellowships support a subspecialty interest, which translates to a proportion of regular rostering in that subspecialty, whilst still participating in the department roster. Up to three of our positions are general roles, which afford a broad experience across all surgical specialities and have a degree of scope to customise towards your area of interest.

Our full-time clinical fellows work within a 1:5 - 1:7 roster for after-hours call (excluding night shifts). You will be well supported, with onsite specialist cover during evenings and weekends. In addition to rostering to acute and elective surgical lists, preadmission clinic and other off-floor service provision roles, sessions will be allocated for non-clinical and administrative activities. All fellows will be expected to contribute to departmental audit / teaching /research / educational advancement or quality improvement measures over the term of employment.

Our positions are ideal for provisional fellows, or those with recent FANZCA admittance wishing to hone advanced clinical skills and work towards gaining greater confidence in transitioning to independent consultant-led practice

Position Requirements
Applicants should hold, or be eligible for, registration as a medical practitioner with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ).
For non ANZCA applicants, an equivalent level of experience in clinical anaesthesia will be considered on a case by case basis. Further details can be provided on request.
Cover letter should indicate your preference/s of fellowship positions.
The applicant should be aware that it is considered a requirement of the role to be available to provide essential services within a COVID management plan (or similar pandemic response).

Our Values
We are committed to upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi and providing culturally safe care. We aspire to having a workforce reflective of the communities we serve and achieving equitable outcomes for all.
