The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment is currently seeking a Senior Business Advisor to support the Head of Immigration New Zealand (Deputy Secretary of MBIE).

It is an exciting time for Immigration New Zealand and our offices are a hive of activity as our team is on a mission to reconnect New Zealand with the rest of the world. Immigration New Zealand is the operational delivery arm of the immigration system. Our core functions are:

- ensuring that people crossing the border and staying in New Zealand are entitled to do so
- helping refugees to make New Zealand their home
- granting visas to the people whom New Zealand needs to work, visit, study or settle here
- playing our part in the global immigration system.

As a Senior Business Advisor, you will take a holistic approach to influence and drive new ways of working while operating across all areas of our business. You will be representing the office of the Deputy Secretary and joining a team that is responsible for leading and delivering a wide range of business advisory services and complex issues.

This is a role that will allow you to use your past experiences, accomplishments and learning, along with your strong business acumen to develop pragmatic tools and ensure the delivery of robust advice and guidance to support the Deputy Secretary, the team and wider INZ.

You’ll be joining an innovative and collegial team in a rapidly changing environment, where you’ll get lots of opportunities to develop your business advisory skills. Working in partnership with and supporting the Principal Advisor, you will be leading and contributing to initiatives that support both strategic direction and operational demands, providing quality and consistent advice to land pragmatic and tangible solutions.

Your strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish a positive and a consultative working relationship with stakeholders will be one of the key successes for this role.

- Strong interpersonal skills, including building and maintaining relationships, influencing, diplomacy, empathy, teamwork and problem-solving
- Excellent political awareness and sensitivity to anticipate areas of potential risk and inform decision-making
- Ability to quickly assimilate new information at a high level, and come to an understanding of unfamiliar and complex issues
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, ability to craft written material for the Deputy Secretary’s approval
- Ability to explore and evaluate new operational delivery practices and approaches
- Proven ability to develop trust and credibility with managers and staff, including an ability to work with senior managers on contentious, difficult and urgent issues

To be eligible for this role, you will need to hold either a New Zealand citizenship or a New Zealand permanent residency class visa
