An exciting opportunity exists for a new Mātanga Tapuhi Nurse Practitioner (NP) position or NP Intern Position in the Patient at Risk Service. This NP Internship is a transitional training role and Registration as a Mātanga Tapuhi NP.
This hospital based Mātanga Tapuhi NP role improves access to urgent assessment and coordinated intervention for patients at risk of deterioration and those requiring medical emergency team (MET) calls. This requires a flexible approach, to provide direct care and treatment as well as support through clinical advice and education. The advanced practice role is integral to the provision and ongoing development of high-quality patient care - that promotes optimal experience and equitable outcomes for patients and their whānau.
The Mātanga Tapuhi NP role contributes through leadership (both clinically and professionally, research utilisation and activities to contribute to practice excellence and positively influence health service delivery for patients at risk across hospital sites. The Mātanga Tapuhi NP will take a lead role in supporting ongoing development of an evolving and effective PAR Service at Kenepuru Community Hospital (KCH) site with a practice focus on the health of the older patient population. Central to this is evolving an advanced Mātanga Tapuhi NP model to enhance patient and staffs access to timely care and expertise. As a nurse leader, the role influences health service delivery. The role will:

- Develop a clinical network to expand PAR Service to the KCH fit for purpose and population
- To provide clinical expertise and leadership in order to enhance point of care for the deteriorating ward patient ensuring care is coordinated, comprehensive, and informed by advanced clinical knowledge
- Promote and conduct research when applicable
- Maintain a visible and credible profile in national nursing and health advisory groups.Mō tō mātou rōpū ' About our team

Wellington Regional Hospital is the tertiary referral centre for the lower North Island and upper South Island of New Zealand. This gives the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) a catchment population of approximately 1,100,000 and a geographic radius of 300km. The ICU has responsibility for delivery of care outside of ICU through our Patient at Risk Service, and Trauma team. An established Research department supports quality practice for this service.
PAR Team
The PAR service is nurse-led team that covers all adult and paediatric wards 24/7 and applies critical care skills to the management of deteriorating and acutely unwell ward patients. PAR nurses support patients, their families and healthcare professionals by: responding to all 777 clinical emergencies and acute referrals; monitoring patients recently discharged from ICU; and, providing education and advice in the management of acutely unwell patients. PAR nurses provide support and expertise to ward staff where and when most needed and help with safe and timely transfers to ICU.
The PAR Service uses a multi-disciplinary approach to identify patients at risk of or developing critical illness in the general ward environment. The emphasis is one of support and education to ward staff to help them recognise clinical deterioration and rapidly initiate an appropriate escalation of care.
Moū ' About you
- Registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand as a Registered Nurse and a current practising certificate with no restrictions.
- Expert level on the PDRP or Senior Expert pathway with at least 5-years relevant expertise and working at an advanced RN practice level

The person in this role will
- Have experience of urgent care, emergency medicine and or primary care practice
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with all levels of staff
- A strong patient care focus and able to deliver high quality of care for patients and whānau
- A passion for ongoing learning and development and the ability to share, support and develop others.
- Comprehensive knowledge informs NZ Health System understanding including equity issues, professional leadership and emerging issues for the nursing profession
