Wellington City, New Zealand New Zealand Government Full time

There's a good chance you've heard of the New Zealand Infrastructure Commission, Te Waihanga. We're small (but mighty) and haven't been around long by government standards. But our job is as big as it gets, helping New Zealand get the right infrastructure, whether it's transport connections that get us from A to B, water and power connections needed to support affordable homes, or schools and hospitals that support our communities.
Te Waihanga seeks to transform infrastructure for all New Zealanders. By doing so our goal is to lift the economic performance of Aotearoa and improve the wellbeing of all New Zealanders.
Our Data Science and Analytics team is now seeking an experienced Data and Analytics Specialist to play a central role in advancing the organisation's analytics capability.
Role purpose | Te Kaupapa o te Tūranga
We're looking for someone to drive our core analytics capability and maximise the value from our investment in data and analytics. You'll help to shape the strategic direction for our country's infrastructure through your work on key initiatives like the New Zealand Infrastructure Strategy and the National Infrastructure Plan.
**In this role, you will be responsible for**:

- Analytical excellence: Conducting high quality analysis, modelling, and research to support New Zealand's long-term infrastructure requirements.
- Best-practice data engineering: Actively developing and refining our data engineering pipelines, to grow and improve the evidence base for the infrastructure sector.
- Platform management: Pushing the capabilities of our data and analytics platform, including Azure, Databricks, and Azure DevOps to ensure performance, security, and flexibility for our fast-moving landscape.
- Project leadership: Planning and executing key analytical projects, and fostering strong relationships with our large network of internal and external stakeholders across the infrastructure and analytics communities.
- Infrastructure Insight: Developing a deep understanding of the broader infrastructure context, enabling the integration of sector-specific insights into your analytical work.
- Data visualisations: Telling compelling stories using best practice techniques that bring our insights to life, integrate with our communications channels, and engage our users.

**Who we are after**: This is a challenging role that demands technical depth across multiple fields (data science, modelling, data engineering, and platform management) as well as a broad generalist skillset. We're seeking a passionate Analytics Engineer, Data Scientist, or Data Engineer, with a proven track-record operating at a Principal or Senior level. There is flexibility with this role so that it can best reflect your strengths and capabilities.
**As the Data and Analytics Specialist, you will be**:

- Motivated by the opportunity to inform and influence the nation's strategic direction on infrastructure.
- A proactive and dependable self-starter, able to take the initiative and drive projects to completion with mínimal supervision.
- A natural with numbers, programming, and technology - with a passion for solving problems and uncovering insights.
- A confident communicator - able to explain complex information clearly to different audiences, and influence key decision-makers.
- Proficient with our technology stack and able to quickly master new tools and systems.
- A data champion eager to leverage the full potential of our tools to ensure that we get the best from our investment in data, analytics tools, and our data intelligence platform, including AI.
