**About the role**:
The purpose of this position is to assist in the management and underwriting of new and renewal business within SMARTpak as part of the wider Agency Team. This role helps to ensure that risks are underwritten in accordance with our acceptance criteria and delegated authority limits. We are looking for someone who adopts a problem solving mind-set in the face of adversity. You will have the ability to develop and maintain relationships with stakeholders across Crombie Lockwood and you will always strive to exceed expectations in service and responsiveness.

**Responsibilities**:

- Assist in the underwriting of new and renewal business within designated authority limits to achieve premium growth and profit objectives (right risk at the right price).
- Underwriting risks that fall within defined limits of authority for the Assistant Underwriter.
- Liaise with the SMARTpak Underwriting Team Leader to determine the most effective solution given the specific customer requirements, the level of risk and current Underwriting Guidelines.
- Supporting the underwriting team to achieve planned underwriting results for new and existing business and identifying underwriting requirements to meet business needs.
- Protecting company’s risk exposure by observing underwriting guidelines.
- Assist in monitoring and reviewing underwriting standards procedures and checklists.
- Reviewing variations from usual proposal standards.
- If appropriate, providing necessary data to the SMARTpak Underwriting Team Leader in order to have delegations by our underwriter adjusted.
- Undertake training with the SMARTpak Underwriting Team Leader to gain experience and confidence in underwriting commercial risks.
- Working with key Crombie Lockwood branches to create long standing sustainable distribution relationships.

**Skills and Experience**:

Essential _**
- Minimum 2 years previous underwriting experience.
- An understanding of company guidelines, delegated authorities and current relevant insurance legislation
- Ability to provide a professional level of underwriting service to brokers in a timely manner in accordance with agreed SLAs
- Ability to find solutions to underwriting problems within defined guidelines.
- The ability to build and maintain positive, constructive and honest relationships internally and externally

**_ Desirable_**
- Relevant insurance qualifications at an ANZIIF Cert IV level
- A tertiary qualification in Commerce, Financial Services, Insurance or NZQA/ Insurance Industry recognised qualifications
- Experience of growing new business opportunities would be advantageous
- Holds or is working towards a Certificate in Financial Services (NZQA Level 5)
