**Mo to m tou Ropu - About the team**

Our Maritime Inspections Team (MIT) aims to protect New Zealand waters by ensuring large New Zealand and foreign flagged vessels meet safety, security, environmental protection and maritime international labour standards. This team will also support the HSWA and General Regulatory Operations teams to deliver healthy and safe outcomes on Ports. This work includes a dedicated and ongoing focus on compliance with domestic and international conventions by both New Zealand and internationally flagged ships travelling in and out of New Zealand's waters.

The Team conducts Port State Control (PSC) and Flag State Control (FSC ) inspections and audits, supports related investigations, and provides input to the updating of PSC and FSC related strategies, policies and practices.

**Te tunga | The role**

Reporting to the Manager, Maritime Inspections, our Inspectors are qualified as a Master or Chief Engineer and have appropriate sea-going experience, or have qualifications recognised in a maritime-related field or have the equivalent experience/training for performing PSC and FSC inspections.

You'll support effective relationship engagement and compliance at Ports and harm prevention programmes while building and maintaining effective relationships with key internal and external stakeholders. Depending on the nature and your level of training and experience, you may also perform a range of other compliance, audit, inspection or investigative functions as required**.**

This is a field role and cannot be performed remotely. Travel will be required.

**Nou te rourou | What you bring**
- A qualified Master or Chief Engineer with the appropriate sea-going experience;
or have recognised qualifications in a maritime-related field,

or have the equivalent experience/training for performing inspections, with specialised training to ensure adequate competence and skills;
- Proven experience with and knowledge of maritime regulations and legislation;
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to problem-solve in complex environments;
- A successful track record as a proactive and innovative thinker;
- Highly effective written and oral communication skills;
- Experience with conducting Port State Control (PSC) and Flag State Control (FSC ) inspections and audits as a regulator would be a definite advantage;
- Ability to coordinate and prioritise your time between training and business as usual work;
- Flexibility to travel as required.

This role is permanent, full time with a minimum of 37.5 hours per week and has a salary range of $100,265 - $122,290 depending on skills and experience. We would consider higher band for qualified and current maritime PSC / FSC inspection experience and recognised qualifications.
