role at Te Whatu Ora Health NZ Waitaha Canterbury, within Canterbury Health Laboratories (CHL). CHL is a leading medical diagnostic reference
laboratory in New Zealand with laboratory links and collaborative research
partners nationally and internationally.
This is a permanent part-time (0.8 FTE, 32 hrs per week) Medical
laboratory scientist position within the Virology/Serology laboratory. This
position is for a registered Medical Laboratory Scientist with qualifications
and experience in the disciplines of serology / virology.
The primary function of
this role is to perform routine and specialist testing and associated duties
in the Virology/Serology Laboratory, to assist in the development of new
procedures and to provide a high-quality service to clients.
We require a scientist with a set of skills and experience to
become a key participant capable of providing the technical and scientific
support required of the role, predominantly in our routine Infectious serology
area. Further to this we require the successful applicant to cover in most
aspects of our large virology area and therefore molecular experience in the
diagnosis of infectious disease is also significantly important. The ability to
participate in our on-call weekend roster and as necessary support our Covid
testing team as required, will also form part of this role.
The role provides opportunities for professional development in
both disciplines and you will be exposed to a variety of current day
technologies and a wide spectrum of diagnostic Infectious Disease testing.
In this role,

**you will be responsible for**:

- Provision of

high-quality service to clients
- Providing technical
and scientific support
- Performing tasks
and techniques in accordance with laboratory procedures and protocols as
directed by the Section Head or delegate
- Receiving,
registering and primary processing of specimens for the Department.
- Use of automated
analysers as well as manual laboratory procedures for both serological and
molecular assays.
- Utilising the
laboratory information system to register patients, input data, and access
results as well as reporting of results through these systems and by telephone as
per laboratory protocols.

diagnostic laboratory and holding current registration.
- Knowledge and experience relevant to the
specific disciplines of serology and virology.
- Adaptability and flexibility to work across
different areas of the laboratory and department.

- Registration with the New Zealand Medical Laboratory Science

Board (MLSB) as a Medical Laboratory Scientist. A current Practising
Certificate issued by the MLSB is required.
- The ability to maintain a high professional standard in line
with the Code of Competencies and Standards for the Practice of Medical
Laboratory Science (MLSB, 2006)
- Maintain a
current Annual Practising Certificate by participation in a re-certification
programme.
