Te Puna Mōrearea I te Rū / The National Geohazards Monitoring Centre (NGMC)

The NGMC is the rapid event response branch of GNS Science. Using the best operationalised science available, the NGMC’s mission is to provide pertinent and rapid intelligence to decision-makers in civil defence and emergency management agencies. There are five teams of four Geohazard Analysts in the Centre. The current teams are a close-knit group who embrace the values of psychological safety and mutual support.

In this role, you will:

- Locate and respond to earthquakes
- Monitor warning systems for volcanic unrest/eruption
- Use tools to identify tsunamigenic threats
- Maintain situational awareness
- Have an Agile mindset
- Be comfortable following standard operating procedures
- Be willing to travel to back up sites several times a year
- Communicate information about significant events to duty officers and experts
- Liaise directly with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA)

About you

The successful applicants for this role will be:

- Open, reflective, and willing to work as a member of a high performing team
- Willing to work in a shift environment (a 6 on 4 off roster)
- Interested in emergency management
- Have a geoscience qualification
- Possess a current full driver’s license
