A fascinating opportunity now exists for an experienced and suitably qualified Mechanical Fitter to join our hardworking and motivated HVDC team based in Wellington. This is a full time, permanent opportunity ( minimum of 40 hours a week).
The HVDC contract is a niche business and is unique to Ventia.
We service a large, well-known NZ organization and have been a strong, consistent, partner to them in delivering Power services all across New Zealand.
**THE ROLE**
You will be working closely with a group of experienced Tradesmen and will have the opportunity to share your skills as well as gain some new ones.
This role is predominantly based at the Haywards substation but maybe required to go away to remote sites as required.
You responsibilities will include ( but not limited to)
- **Building and installation of equipment - **Devising, fabricating, and assembling new or modified mechanical components; Reading drawings, or technical orders to determine methods and sequences of assembly; Verifying part dimensions or clearances to ensure conformance to specifications, using precision measuring instruments; Diagnosing mechanical problems and determine how to correct them, checking drawings, repair manuals, or parts catalogues, as necessary; Repairing or replacing defective equipment parts; Building steel frames, gantries, frameworks and other apparatus as required; Installing, erecting equipment and upgrading it as per specifications
- **Plant repair and maintenance - **Inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, repair and replacement of HV equipment as necessary. This could include the following: Carrying-out scheduled diagnostic inspections of all primary plant, i.e. Cables, Resistors, Power Transformers, compressors and Air systems etc; Maintaining and repairing auxiliary plant, i.e. Pumps, cooling fans, controls etc; Identifying defective equipment and planning unscheduled repairs in a timely manner; Servicing disconnectors; Repairing, replacing, and cleaning equipment and components such as circuit breakers, transformers, instrument transformers.
- **Work Site management and Participation - **Conducting work site risk assessment and identification of work limitations; Evaluating primary equipment condition prior to undertaking the work; Completing required checklists, job cards and time sheets accurately and on time.
- **Equipment Control and Maintenance - **Ensuring that all equipment is maintained to required working standard, including assigned vehicles; Reporting any repair or malfunction issues to Supervisor and/or arranging repair / check-up / service as scheduled and/or required; Correctly cleaning and storing all equipment and tools at the end of each shift.
**ABOUT YOU**
**Core requirements needed for the role**:
- Relevant trade experience, (minimum of four years)
- 3 years post qualification experience
- Drivers licence
**OTHER SKILLS AND EXPERTISE**
- Demonstrate experience in mechanical fitter tasks (e.g. welding, turning, building)
- Demonstrated proficiency in using hand tools (used in construction and industrial maintenance);
- Ability to identify and control Hazards and risks; Demonstrated high levels of understanding of and adherence to the Health and Safety practices and regulations of the Low Voltage and High Voltage Industry
- Demonstrated ability, willingness and commitment to be multi-skilled and up-skilling; Continuously up-dating necessary skills and knowledge as required for the role and showing a willingness to learn.
- Physically fit especially with regards to heavy lifting, stretching and climbing (free of back problems); Maintaining physical fitness to the level required by the position; Not afraid of heights
- Full drivers license and experience driving appropriate vehicles in all road, terrain and weather conditions.
Other strengths required for this role are: team work; self-motivation; ownership of jobs; reporting skills; ability to work alone and under pressure; availability for travel and a good sense of humour.
Flexible working hours are an essential part of the role as our job is to help maintain the NZ Power industry which is a critical and basic need in the country. Therefore, participation in weekend and night stand-by rosters may be part of the job requirement. Must be able to travel and work away from home with short notification.
