This position contributes to the operations of the Public Law team within the Legal and Privacy division. The team is responsible for providing legal advice and support to the Ministry across operational advice in relation to education legislation, contracting and procurement, human rights, official information and privacy, the development of policy and legislation, the Treaty of Waitangi/te Tiriti of Waitangi, and dispute resolution and litigation.
Mō tēnei tūranga | About this role
As a key part of the public law team, you will provide legal advice and support across the Ministry. This is an opportunity to expand your skillset into the Treaty space, or further develop the skills you already have. There will be a focus on Māori interests and outcomes and the Treaty of Waitangi/te Tiriti o Waitangi issues in education. You will be supported by the Legal Manager, Matthew Kidd, who also has a strong background in this space.

**You will**:

- Provide public law advice relevant to the Ministry
- Support the development, implementation and monitoring of education policy and legislation. This will include but not be limited to the wānanga sector framework and the Māori medium and Kaupapa Māori work programme
- Manage their role in several Waitangi Tribunal inquiries, including the upcoming Education services and outcomes Kaupapa inquiry

Mōhou ake | About you
This is a varied and challenging role. The ability to work collaboratively with others to achieve results is essential. We are looking for a committed team player that is also a self-starter and able to work independently. Previous experience working on te Tiriti o Waitangi and Māori issues and outcomes is not required, but you must have a desire to work in this space and a strong understanding of its principles.
- 6+ years' PQE or other relevant experience
- Public law experience is ideal but if you believe you have other expertise that would add value in this role, we would love to hear from you
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Solid knowledge and experience of the machinery of government and the public sector
- A solid understanding of the Treaty of Waitangi/te Tiriti o Waitangi and its principles
- Strong research, investigative, analytical, logical, and problem-solving skills.
- A high level of integrity, self-motivation, flexibility, and responsiveness.
