We're Working for Wellington. Wellington City Council's team provides more than 400 services every day for Wellingtonians - everything from parks and pools to consents and cemeteries - playing our part in making Pōneke an inclusive, sustainable and creative capital for people to live, work and play.
Come and join us as we work together for Wellington's future - kia mahi ngātahi mō Pōneke mō tōna āpōpō.
**City Consenting and Compliance team**
City Consenting and Compliance is the main statutory and regulatory unit of Wellington City Council and ensures the appropriate use of land, the integrity of buildings and to maintain public health and safety.
Sitting within this unit, The Building Compliance and Consents team ensures residential and commercial buildings in Wellington are safe. We issue consents, undertake inspections, manage the building warrant of fitness regime and respond to compliance matters and complaints. We are a tight team that works collaboratively together to support each other. We work hard but we also like to have fun and take the time to celebrate our achievements.
**The role**
We are looking for a Compliance Officer to join the team
Your day will consist of responding to and investigating customer enquiries related to residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. Our fundamental goal is to ensure we have safe and lawful buildings in Wellington, and to assist the public with their building related concerns.
You'll get a real mix of office-work as well as being out in the community making site visits in a variety of environments - from residential pool audits to investigating that extra house addition that someone's neighbour has built, and they aren't too happy about it.
You'll be well supported by others in the team and paired up until you feel comfortable being out and about on your own - we have a great induction plan and robust process maps to help you on your way.
**So who are we looking for?**
We are wanting to hear from those who have experience working in an environment regulated by legislation and standards - and understand the importance of enforcing them. We aren't asking that you are already familiar with the Building Act 2004, just that you have good understanding of legislation and how it translates into a practical context.
Alternatively, you may have extensive experience working with the Building Act 2004 or other similar legislation and processes through your experience in the trade, or other industry and want a change - don't worry, this is by no means a desk-bound role if that is some of your hesitation from leaving the tools
Either way, you will need a valid, clean, full or restricted NZ driver licence to drive a car and complete the site visits.
You'll be someone who enjoys working with people from all walks of life with the maturity to handle the conflict and politics that does come with compliance work. You'll be approachable, resilient and keen to find the most practical solution for all involved - with the view of educating in the first instance but being comfortable to take enforcement action where needed. You can keep a level head and know how and when to de-escalate a situation.
We want to make sure any accessibility requirements you may have, are well supported so the selection process is equitable for everyone.
