**WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER**:
The Conservation Practitioner VI (Marine Ecosystem Advisor) plays a key role in developing and implementing our marine strategy with a focus on establishing Ecosystem Based Management (EBM) as a core element of management of the Aotearoa New Zealand marine domain. The position will help position TNC as a major contributor to the protection and restoration of marine ecosystems in Aotearoa New Zealand through developing an innovative and highly collaborative programme of work. The position will help develop good relationships between TNC and relevant agencies and marine and EBM experts and will work closely with iwi, partner agencies, and other stakeholders to develop and implement projects. The role will be focused primarily on projects within Aotearoa New Zealand, but there may be opportunities to contribute to projects in other parts of the Asia Pacific Region and to TNC global initiatives.
This position reports to the New Zealand Director of Conservation or Associate Director of Conservation.

Over the next decade, TNC has committed to help conserve four billion hectares of ocean - more than 10% of the world’s ocean area - through new and better-managed protected areas, sustainable fishing practices and positive policy changes. TNC is well-placed to deliver this ambitious goal given our experience, track record and expertise in areas such as shellfish restoration, sustainable aquaculture, and improving the sustainability and accountability of marine fisheries. Increasing the impact and scope of TNC’s marine work in Aotearoa New Zealand is vital to our global success. Therefore, we are looking to build the capacity of our marine programme, with a particular focus on the role an Ecosystem-Based Management (EBM) can play in advancing New Zealanders’ marine conservation aspirations. TNC’s global expertise in EBM and coordinating seascape-scale projects makes us well-placed to contribute to the development of EBM in Aotearoa New Zealand.

**WHAT YOU'LL BRING**:

- A postgraduate qualification relevant for marine ecosystem protection and restoration, or extensive (greater than 10 years’ experience) in EBM or a similar field.
- At least 5 years’ experience in EBM or a similar field.
- Experience negotiating complex agreements.
- Experience coordinating multiple projects.
- Experience developing, coordinating and implementing projects with multiple organizations,
- Familiarity with NZ's marine environment and issues'
- Experience working with communities.
- Relationship building experience to work closely with a variety of partners, i.e., media, government officials, internal scientists.
- Experience completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
- Experience with communication via written, spoken and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
- Valid driver's license.

**DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS**
- Background or Education in marine biology or ecology
- A diverse related work experience
- Understanding of Te Ao Māori approach to conservation
- Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience.
- Knowledge of marine protection principles and marine protection instruments in Aotearoa New Zealand and globally.
