Simple Machines is looking to hire a talented Senior Data Engineer to join our amazing team. This is a full-time role to be based in Sydney or Christchurch.

We need you to help us design and deliver a fantastic program of data focussed engineering projects for our globally distributed client base.

**About the role**:
You’ll work closely with our engineering and analytics teams to understand client needs and design and successfully deliver compelling market leading solutions. Sound good so far?

Here’s a brief overview of the role’s responsibilities:

- Work with business stakeholders to understand their domain and data
- Work with engineers to define technical solutions that meet stakeholder requirements
- Design, develop, and orchestrate scalable data pipelines
- Collaborate with data platforms teams to ensure that platforms meet technical requirement; this will involve acting as an interface with a variety of technical stakeholders working within differing organisational structures

**Requirements**:
**The required skills that we are after**:

- Experience in configuring deploying and configuring data lakes and data warehouses; building and working on existing data pipelines.
- Working with unstructured, semi-structured and structured data
- Experience with a general-purpose programming language, e.g. Python, Java, Scala.
- Ability to learn new programming languages autonomously
- Understanding of considerations when working with big data - access patterns, formats, etc.
- Experience in one (or more) cloud platforms is essential, such as AWS, GCP, Azure
- Developing complex code-based ETL/ELT data pipelines with performance optimised data modelling
- Experience with streaming data concepts and technologies
- Ability to model data to meet stakeholder expectations and identify ways to simplify complex data pipelines
- The ability to articulate tech-agnostic data engineering concepts and make recommendations regarding why one technology should be used over the other
- Knowledge of best practices with designing, building, and maintaining data processing systems
- Appreciation and experience with Data Management & Data Governance best practices
- Developing data strategies and architectures with customers at a strategic level

**The skills we would love you to have but are not essential**:

- Experience with streaming technologies like Kafka, RabbitMQ, Azure Event Hub, Kinesis
- Experience with infrastructure as code tooling, e.g. Terraform, Pulumi, CDK or Kubernetes
- Experience with containerised solutions, e.g. Docker
