**_About us/Mō mātou_**
The Department of Preventive and Social Medicine is a long-established academic centre for public health. It has teaching staff in Māori health, epidemiology, public health medicine, biostatistics, health policy, health promotion, qualitative research, environmental health, health economics, injury prevention, and occupational health. Preventive and Social Medicine is part of the Dunedin School of Medicine in the Division of Health Sciences, University of Otago.
The Department has a strong research base. Details of staff in the Department and scientific publications can be found on the departmental website.
The Department offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate papers and teaches medical students at all levels of their course. Research students are supervised for Masters and PhD degrees.
**_The role/Te mahi_**
We have the opportunity to hire a Lecturer in Biostatistics to teach courses in the undergraduate and postgraduate public health and biostatistics programmes, and to engage in health research in their areas of expertise and interest. The person appointed will also be expected to supervise research students and to contribute to the life of the Department.
Key tasks include:
- Engaging in collaborative public health research.
- Independent research in Biostatistics.
- Teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
- Supervision or co-supervision of research students in biostatistics and public health.
**_Skills and experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako_**
- Previous teaching experience at a university level is preferred.
- Have the ability to communicate with small and large groups.
- Have evidence of an ability to work well with students and staff from differing academic and cultural backgrounds and at all levels of the institution.
- A strong commitment to research is required and applicants should have a record of publication and other evidence of research capability.
- Evidence of research funding and postgraduate student supervision are desirable.
- An understanding of, and commitment to, the Treaty of Waitangi, particularly in relation to Public Health and the University environment.
