Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role
The Child Development Service provides specialist assessment and community-based support for tamariki/rangatahi up to 16 years. The multidisciplinary team includes paediatricians and child development nurses as well as physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists and social workers. The psychologist in this role would focus on seeing children/young people referred by the paediatricians for neurodevelopmental assessment. They would be liaising regularly with education services and our local NASC, Kia Roha.
Children referred for neurodevelopmental assessment often include those with suspected Intellectual Disability but also Autism and Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, with co-occurrence being commonplace. We have in use digitally scored and administered psychometric assessment tools, as well as support from other team members to streamline assessment processes.
Working in a smaller region guarantees a wide range of experience. We have a thriving group of 20 clinical, counselling and neuro psychologists working at Te Whatu Ora Taranaki across a range of specialties and typically have at least one Intern and some students on pre-Intern placements. Training and supervision in neurodevelopmental assessment can be provided by psychologists skilled and experienced in this work as required.
