Summer Student: Kia Ora Te Waonui

Scion hosts a number of summer students, each with differing specialities, from tertiary institutes across New Zealand at both our Rotorua and Christchurch Campus. The programme involves a student completing a 12-week, full-time, research project under the direction of Scion supervisors (allowing time for holidays over the Christmas and New Year). Students are able to gain hands on, paid, work experience in the field of which they are studying, where they get to work shoulder to shoulder with Scion's internationally recognised staff.
We are seeking two motivated tauira / student to support the 'Kia Ora te Waonui' research pathway.
**The primary objective of the work/project**:
The project will assist the tasks that contribute to the overall Māori-led research pathway with some specific and varied tasks that will provide experience and grow capability of the tauira summer student within a Crown Research Institute. Consideration of Te Ao Māori approaches and benefits to Te Taiao will be central to the programme of work while still drawing on forests, ngahere, environmental, ecological, biosecurity and biodiversity aspects.
**Research Abstract**
Scion's Restoration Protection and Mauri o Te Waonui a Tāne science portfolio focuses research on preparing for and responding to climate enhanced ecological risks in our standing forests, including insects, pathogens, fire, social and Māori-led research for intergenerational prosperity and perpetuity of ngahere for Aotearoa, New Zealand.
Holistic Te Ao Māori approaches will be drawn on to achieve key aspects of the "Kia Ora Te Waonui" and support will be provided to utilse the tauira / students core skills and develop new skills.
**What you will do**:
You will be passionate in ngahere, kaitiakitanga, and various forms and approaches to quality rangahau. You will work closely with the project and portfolio leader, and work across various science fields to collate and highlight key research, climate and cultural considerations.
**Qualifications, skills and attributes needed**:
Key skills and attributes are good communication and engagement skills, quality writing skills, creativity, experience in kaupapa and mahi related to ngahere, taiao, kaitiakitanga. The student may be studying Environmental Science, Environmental Planning, Social Science, Ecology, Biosecurity, Biodiversity, Taiao / Pūtaiao. Te Reo me ōna tikanga is welcomed but not essential.
