**Ko te kaupapa | About the role**

The Waimarino Midwifery Service (WMS) is a midwifery team, who provide care to our remote rural hapu wahine, pēpi and whānau living in the Waimarino, Ruapehu and National Park rohe. They are situated in Raetihi with clinic rooms and a birthing unit located within the rural Waimarino community health centre. The WMS provides antenatal and postnatal care and labour support for low-risk primary wahine who wish to birth locally, either in the unit or at home. Care is provided 24 hours 7 days a week in a shared caseload model of care, supported by a local locum midwife. The WMS is supported by a dedicated team of health and allied health practitioners. This includes nurses, a social worker, administration staff, mental health, and iwi providers. The WMS team also works collaboratively with colleagues at Whanganui Hospital to provide safe care for wahine, pēpi and whānau who require secondary services.

Health NZ/Te Whatu Ora - Whanganui serves an estimated population of 68,395 and includes residents of the Whanganui and Rangitikei Territorial Authority areas, as well as the Ruapehu Territorial Authority area wards of Waimarino and Waiouru - known as South Ruapehu.

The community we provide care to is semi-rural - rural with Māori making up 27.3% of our population (compared to the New Zealand average of 16.6%) and small but growing populations of Pacific and Asian people.

The Waimarino Maternity Service supports women and their families through their pregnancy, labour and birth and postnatal care up to six weeks. With partnership and plans of care founded on a philosophy of supporting physiological labour and birth.

Hours available are 1.0 FTE working four days on and four days off, inclusive of on-call. This position is permanent.
