Wellington Regional and Kenepuru Hospitals
Wellington Regional Hospital has modern facilities and offers exciting opportunities and top level training. Te Pae Tiaki (The Wellington Hospital Emergency Department) provides emergency care to people in the Greater Wellington, Porirua and Kāpiti regions. Each year the Department sees approximately 65,000 patients. With 45 treatment cubicles including three resuscitation bays, seven minor care and one eye. The majority have access to cardiac monitoring. Our medium hospital size brings friendliness to the work environment.
Our hospital is a leader in training for Emergency Medicine - accredited by ACEM for 36 months of metropolitan training, Paediatric Log-book and TS4 under the new training programme. Wellington trainees continue to excel at the primary and fellowship exams. We also have established training rotations to Paediatrics and ICU, both accredited for TS4, and also available to more junior trainees.
Our Director of Emergency Medicine Ultrasound provides an active ultrasound training programme with weekly review of all scans and regular mentored scanning for all interested. Other areas of interest include: Toxicology, Simulation Training, Trauma and Disaster planning. Te Pae Tiaki | Wellington ED has an established mentoring programme.
The Hospital campus includes the Wellington division of the Otago Clinical School of Medicine and the National Patient Simulator Training Centre, providing additional opportunities for teaching and research.
Te Pae Tiaki | Wellington Hospital Emergency Department offers:
A great work environment, in a 45 bed department with a broad Emergency case mix including paediatrics and trauma, with support from all tertiary specialties;
Emergency consultant cover on the floor 16+ hours per day, and on call overnight. This means an Emergency Specialist is usually immediately available to you for consultation/clinical review or questions;
Supportive team based working practice (working in teams with small groups of doctors and nurses in zoned areas);
A supportive training environment with dedicated teaching time, dedicated ACEM Exam tutorials with an exceptional pass rate in Primary and Fellowship, on the floor training, ample opportunity to do Work-based assessments (WBAs) and weekly simulation based critical scenario teaching. Shifts are also allocated weekly for an emergency registrar to attend theatre for anaesthetic experience.
An opportunity to work with and contribute to a team and department that has made a commitment to develop a service that will provide equitable emergency care with a specific focus on equity for Māori and ensuring Māori staff will have power in all departmental decision making.
