He angitūtanga | About the role
Supporting the Manukura - Kākāriki Karaka (Operations Manager - Orange-fronted parakeet) you will be providing supervision across the team to implement the work programmes for kākāriki karaka across Te Waipounamu South Island.
Based in the Rangiora District Office in North Canterbury, you will lead the team of up to 10 Rangers in the field to ensure work is being done safely and to a high standard.

**Your responsibilities will include**:

- analyse and understand tasks, team capability and capacity to decide how work should be delivered,
- lead selection panels for recruiting direct reports within the team,
- approve timesheets and consider leave requests on behalf of the Operations Manager,
- contribute to DOC's Health and Safety systems and practices, including Job Safety Analysis,
- conduct Monthly Operating Reviews, monitor wellbeing and identify individual capability gaps and aspirations,
- coach, train and mentor team members to equip them to succeed in their work and grow their skills,
- engage and manage contractors as agreed with the Operations Manager to resource the work programme.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience
We are looking for a Health and Safety focused person with a background in biodiversity, and who has the following skills:

- two to three years field experience working with birds,
- project management experience,
- threatened species management experience,
- positive health, safety, and wellbeing culture,
- an understanding of Te Ao Māori,
- strong communication and excellent relationship skills,
- have excellent communication skills,
- a high level of attention to detail,
- tech savvy and experience using field-based technology.

**Desirable**:

- experience in staff supervision,
- a relevant tertiary qualification,
- a Full New Zealand Driver's Licence (manual),
- experience and qualifications using Light Utility Vehicles (LUV), 4WD vehicles, and helicopters,
- a current First Aid Certificate.

Mō te tīma | About the team
The successful applicant will join the Kākāriki Karaka Operations Team. This consists of the Manukura (Operations Manager), Senior Ranger, two Supervisors, and twelve rangers based out of North Canterbury. We have a dedicated science advisor from the biodiversity team. There is also a small team on Oruawairua/Blumine Island including a logistics support ranger and three field rangers.
The focus of this team is to prevent the extinction of kākāriki karaka. The North Canterbury rangers are split between monitoring, trapping, and research roles. The trapping team provides constant pest control in kākāriki habitat, while the monitoring team are finding and protecting nests and monitoring the outcomes. The research ranger assists the science advisor and is responsible for the large volume of photo and video footage that is recorded each season.

The salary range for this position is $77,336 to $97,708 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.
