Wellington City, New Zealand New Zealand Government Full time

The Ministry acts in the world to build a safer, more prosperous and more sustainable future for New Zealanders.

Kia hangai ake e te Manatu he ao-haumaru, ao-tonui, ao-pumau, ki te oranga tonutanga mo Aotearoa whanui.

Aloha E komo mai Nau mai, haere mai
- Would you like to help strengthen New Zealand’s partnerships in Hawai’i and the North Pacific?
- Are you an outstanding communicator with a proven track record of delivering high quality analysis/advice to inform decision-making?
- Are you ready to advocate for New Zealand’s interests, while living in one of the most beautiful places in the world?

Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

The New Zealand Consulate in Honolulu is seeking an experienced policy professional to appoint to the role of Policy Adviser. A core focus of the Consulate’s work is maintaining a network of relationships with US Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM) with the objective of better understanding the United States’ approach to regional risk management and explaining the implications for New Zealand. The Consulate is also responsible for managing New Zealand’s diplomatic relationships with the North Pacific - i.e. Palau, Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Federated States of Micronesia. Looking for opportunities to support and thicken New Zealand’s partnerships is a central component of the Consulate’s mission.

The Policy Adviser plays a key role in supporting outreach with military and civilian contacts in Hawai’i; engagement with North Pacific partners; and management of the NZD1.5 million North Pacific Development Programme. The role would suit an applicant who has a sound understanding of New Zealand’s Indo-Pacific interests and an appreciation of the complexity and risks inherent in the geo-strategic challenges in the region. Strong communication skills (particularly report writing), sound judgement and the ability to contribute to, and thrive as part of, a small team are all prerequisites. Previous experience working on national security / foreign policy / development issues would be an advantage, as would New Zealand citizenship.

The salary range for this position is USD 66,600 to USD 91,520 and appointment within the range is negotiable, depending on experience.

Mā‎ wai te mahi nei? - What qualities are we looking for?

- The ability to prepare high-quality written analysis, at speed, of events and trends that are impacting New Zealand’s interests.
