We are looking to fill a Senior Analyst level position within the Analytics & Modelling team. At the Ministry you will find no day is the same. An analyst in our team undertakes research and analysis of complex and sensitive issues to bring evidence and insights into transport decisions.
In our multifunctional team, analysts go beyond the reporting of data to provide expert technical advice that leverages skills across data science and data engineering. Our areas of work include transport safety, current and future travel behaviour and demand, vehicle emissions, and much more You'll have the opportunity to lead the development of innovative, practical and robust data science relevant to policy decision making. You'll also help our team move and manage our data processes in the cloud using Amazon Web Services.
Our team ethos emphasises strong technical work communicated in an open and accessible to both our internal policy stakeholders as well as our open data offerings to the public. We largely work with open source tools and actively improve our processes to leverage better tools and more agile ways of working.
Te wāhi ki a koe | What you'll bring
You don't have to be in working in the public sector to have the skills that we need. Instead, you need experience in leading and steering projects (from scoping and development to delivery), problem-solving complex issues, and providing high quality analytics.

**You'll have the following skills and experience**:

- A strong background in data science especially in statistical modelling methods using R or Python. R is our preferred language for data science with Python supporting the data engineering work.
- Familiarity in doing computational work within a Linux environment.
- Some experience with cloud based environments, preferably Amazon Web Service (AWS) is highly desirable. We are developing our data infrastructure with services like EC2, ECS, S3, Lambda, Athena, Fargate and tools like Python CDK or Terraform. Where experience is mínimal, we are looking for data scientists with a strong interest in developing these skills in the role.
- A demonstrated ability to think conceptually, and to translate new and emerging ideas into evidence based insights and analysis.
- Strong communication skills and capable of working with a wide range of stakeholders, from those in the public sector, in industry and in the wider transport sector.
- Ability to work collaboratively with internal customers and other stakeholders to determine requirements, obtain data and information, develop methodologies and communicate results.

Whānuitanga Utu ā-Tau | Salary range
The salary range for the role is $104,976 - $127,814. The salary offered will be based on skills and experience.
