**PURPOSE OF THE POSITION **

To provide excellent diagnosis, leadership and operational support within the haematology

laboratory with a strong professional focus.

To lead the implementation and monitoring of strategic and operational plans.

To provide leadership to nursing and medical staff to ensure safe, focussed care for the patient
and their family in line with vision and values of Counties Manukau District Health Board

**NATURE AND SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES**

**Laboratory Haematology Clinical Activities**Provide a thorough review of referred
blood films, interpreting morphological
findings in conjunction with the clinical
background. Formulate a report outlining
potential causes of the problem and
further management taking into account
the turn-around time

Liaise with clinicians and general
practitioners as appropriate to provide
meaningful explanation for full blood count
abnormalities and guidance about further
clinically appropriate laboratory
investigations

Perform and report bone marrow biopsies
incorporating results from additional
studies such as conventional cytogenetics,
FISH, molecular and cell marker studies
Results should be reported in a timely
fashion and with a high level of accuracy

Provide coagulation and special
haematology report interpretation and
where appropriate write to the referring
clinician or the GP

Provide clinical oversight of haematology
laboratory operations including internal
and external quality control material,
protocols and standard operating
procedures, acquisition and introduction of
new analysers, development of new tests.

Supervise haematology laboratory trainees
and liaise with the college of pathologists
to help achieve their educational goals

Post graduate teaching for laboratory
scientists and medical staff

Successful performance will be measured
by meeting relevant key performance
indicators from the laboratory services
business plan, and including clinician
satisfaction with advice received, turn
- around times of laboratory and bone

**Consultative Clinics ** The primary responsibility will be to provide a

specialist opinion including the diagnosis and
a management plan, with ongoing
assessment and management of the more
difficult clinical problems.

In clinic the consultant will be accountable for

providing such an opinion, attending the clinic
at the appointed times, communicating
effectively with the patient and referring
general practitioner or specialist, using
resources (investigations, treatments, and the
clinic time itself) in a rational way within
agreed protocols and guidelines (where they
exist)
- also signing results and letters.

Clinics are currently undertaken at

Middlemore Hospital. At least one scheduled
clinic will be undertaken each week, plus
supervision of Registrar clinic(s) and informal
clinical assessments with seriously ill patients
on an as-needed basis. Clinical oversight of
the Venesection and Nurse Specialist clinics.

Each clinic includes the following activities:

vetting new referrals to prioritise and
assess

liaising with referring GP's to discuss new
referrals when necessary

patient contact time

contact with families and caregivers

requesting and reviewing results of
investigations

making a treatment plan

following up patients to monitor progress

general administration time

consulting with other specialists

obtaining informed consent in accordance
with guidelines

teaching and supervision of trainees

following and acting on clinic results when
patient is between clinic appointments
