We have a 3-year, full-time funded PhD position in our 'Breeding low methane cattle' research programme.

We are looking for someone to start as soon as possible.

We have measurements of methane emissions and feed intake from young dairy sires. We also have rumen fluid samples from these same bulls. This programme is in its third year, so we already have a lot of data ready and waiting to be interrogated. By the end of 2023 we will have measured between 800 and 900 young dairy bulls. There is a further research programme that is underway to measure methane emissions and feed intake on the daughters of some of the bulls that have been through our measurement facility.

Ideally, we are looking for someone to work on aspects of genetic evaluation of methane and feed intake. There are opportunities to plan and undertake animal trials if that is of interest. One aspect we are particularly interested in is understanding how to integrate feed intake data and the pattern of feed intake into methane phenotypes.
