The Role

We are seeking an early career Engineering Geologist or Engineering Geomorphologist, specialising in slope instability and landslide processes, hazard and risk, to undertake a range of research and consultancy projects relating to landslide science. The appointment will be based at Lower Hutt, Wellington region but may involve New Zealand wide and international travel.

You will have:

- A minimum of an MSc in Engineering Geology or a related discipline.
- 1-5 years’ experience in Engineering Geology or Engineering Geomorphology research and/or consulting.
- Knowledge of the geotechnical properties of rocks and soils and methods for their engineering geological or geophysical mapping and investigation.
- Knowledge of slope stability concepts, landslide mechanics, and hillslope processes.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a track-record of technical report writing and/or publishing in scientific literature.
- Intermediate-level skill in the use of geo-spatial, statistical, or numerical modelling packages for investigating slope stability and landslide processes.
- Intermediate-level skills in the use of GIS software packages (ArcGIS or QGIS).
- Intermediate-level experience of fieldwork and organising and carrying out field-based activities relating to hillslope and landslide investigations.
- Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
- A flexible and adaptable team player mentality.
- Good time management and organisational skills.
- Leading the design, execution, and dissemination of one or more engineering geological/geomorphological research or consultancy projects.
- Undertaken relevant engineering geological/geomorphological fieldwork for example (but not limited to) rock mass surveys, topographic or ground deformation surveys, geophysical surveys, site investigation, and mapping.
- Worked with remote sensing data and geospatial datasets to map landslides and related landforms.
- Applied statistical analytical techniques and/or geo-spatial modelling to study slope stability and landslide processes for research or consultancy projects.
- Undertaken laboratory experiments to measure the strength properties of rocks and soils to examine the failure mechanisms of landslides and rock slopes.
- Have some experience of working with Iwi/Maori groups and organisations to build relationships with the aim of facilitating Maori development.

This position is a permanent, full time (38 hours per week) role and will be based at our Avalon site in Lower Hutt, Wellington.
