At Te Tai Ōhanga The Treasury we're creating a better future for New Zealand and everyone who calls our amazing country home. We're the Government's economic and financial advisor, working hard to raise the standard of living for everyone in Aotearoa, now and in the future.
Our talented people bring their diverse backgrounds and experiences to tackling New Zealand's biggest and most inter-connected issues. Every day, they are influencing, advising, and supporting Ministers, Crown CEOs and Government decision-makers to shape our country's collective tomorrow.
Kōrero mō te tūranga | About the Role
An exciting opportunity for an experienced people leader to lead our Welfare & Oranga Tamariki Vote team (the WOT team) on a fixed term basis until February 2026.
The WOT team is responsible for three large social policy votes: Social Development, Oranga Tamariki, and Disability, and the newly established Social Investment vote. The team works closely with other central agencies to support the agencies responsible for these votes. It leads the Treasury's advice to Ministers on the value for money of government spending in social policy and on the social policy system and reforms. Additionally, the team coordinates with other Treasury teams that lead system advice, including the Budget and the Fiscal Sustainability Programme.
In this role, you will have the chance to demonstrate your people leadership, relationship-building, and strategic skills in high-profile areas of vote, policy, and system reform. You are expected to be an active and supportive member of the Public Sector Management team and the broader Budget and Public Service Directorate leadership team.
Ō pūmanawa | About You

- Have experience that shows good understanding of Treasury's vote role in the public finance system
- Have the ability to navigate political interface with ease and ensure the team delivers high quality, timely and influential advice that meets Minister's needs and requirements
- Be an effective operator who can pivot from the urgent and critical to the strategic to support the team to focus on the most important issues
- Have exceptional relationship management skills and credibility to engage with and influence senior decision makers whilst connecting issues and being aware of changing environments
- Be skilled in excellent interpersonal and communication with the ability to draw on relationship networks across the building
- Be resilient with the ability to operate effectively in an extremely fast-paced, changeable and ambiguous environment
- Have the ability to represent the Treasury in senior forums in a confident, influential and collaborative manner
Ko ngā hua | What we Offer
This is an important job and that's why we'll do all we can to support your success.
